There are two paths to being a PM that I've found:

  1. Starting out at a large company and learning a variety of roles in a compressed time frame
  2. (Me) Having worked in a variety of roles that combined gives you a deep appreciation and respect of all business functions. Although I'm an engineer by training, I've done sales, business development, program management and customer service over the course of my career. I also actively code on the side.
And 3 crazy important traits:
  1. Humility
  2. Being an active learner. (I just taught myself CSS Grid to put this site up). That could also be yak-shaving, but I did it on my own time. :)
  3. Getting your hands dirty.

Stuff I've done over the last year:

  • Taught myself Figma and deployed it at a company. I love the idea of having a single design system, combining mockups and prototypes and a single source of truth.
  • Shepherded features from concepts through to release
  • Built out JIRA dashboards
  • Queried DB's with SQL. It is beyond important to sourcing data and insights, but my subquery skills aren't yet where I'd like them to be. See #2.
  • Engaged actively in customer discovery - anyone who tells you avoiding confirmation bias is easy is lying.
  • Managed agile deliverables and sprint planning.
  • Created sales and support training decks.
  • Created business proposals
  • Created business processes & frameworks
  • Attended conferences to speak directly with customers
